2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR review: pantomime in spades

The 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR is exhilarating. With its supercharged engine, sharp look and engaging driving experience, the SVR comes close to the nirvana of performance SUVs than most competitors in the segment. The SVR does this by committing to deliver performance that is nearly superior to any other metric, which makes this Jag not just fun because it’s an SUV. It is a complete stop of a good performance vehicle.

To put the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR at its pace, I spent a week living with it, alternating between rapid blasts through canyons and commutes to see if this SUV is more than just a performer. While this Jaguar isn’t without its flaws, it offers an exciting driving experience for the type of buyer who needs one car to do it all.

Aging like a good wine

The 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR marks the first model year of this SUV’s mid-cycle refresh and facelift. The first generation SVR was an amazing thing to watch. Designed by Ian Callum, the man behind heavyweights such as the Aston Martin Vanquish, DB9 and DB7, the F-Pace sets itself apart as a truly enjoyable family transporter.

The refresh, however, goes a step further, using sleeker lines and emphasizing the SVR’s commitment to performance. It all starts at the front, where the latter Jag sports improved aerodynamics that allow more airflow, resulting in improved cooling and a 35% drop in lift. In addition, the new face reduces the coefficient of drag of this SUV, allowing it to pass through the air more efficiently.

My tester was finished in a premium SVO paint color called Desire Deep Red, which itself is a $ 4,550 option. While this shade can’t decide whether it’s brown, red, or purple, the way it moves under different lighting scenarios only expands the SVR’s visual appeal. Additionally, my tester’s dark gray contrast trim highlighted key elements of the F-Pace’s design, including its wheel arches, front aero, and rear diffuser.

The rear of the SVR picks up where the front left off with its new LED taillights. While the large spoiler on the rear hatch screams sporty, everything revolves around the rear diffuser. Flanked by two aero elements that help channel air, the diffuser houses four polished tailpipes that stand out against the dark paintwork of this SUV, but also help highlight the SVR’s most critical part, its engine. .

550 horsepower and a driving experience to match

While most performance SUVs juggle the difficult task of trying to be both comfortable and sporty at the same time, the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR breaks up by committing to performance. Powered by a supercharged 5.0-liter V8, the SVR develops 550 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. All that power allows this 4,535 pounds Jaguar to reach 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

As well as delivering linear power from its supercharger, this V8 sounds fantastic, producing a throaty sound worthy of a muscle car. While the valves in the exhaust let you calm things down, hit the throttle with the valves open, and you’ve got one of the best performing SUVs I’ve ever driven.

The SVR turns noise into speed via an eight-speed automatic transmission mated to an all-wheel drive system. Around town, this Jag’s powertrain quiets down considerably, blending into the background of your commute with smooth gear changes and quick responses to throttle inputs. However, the SVR shifts much faster at high speeds, providing a more aggressive driving experience. While this drivetrain isn’t as crisp as you might expect from a dual clutch, that’s almost it.

While this SUV is a real performer with excellent straight-line speed, that’s not its most impressive trait. The party element of the SVR is the way it handles. With adaptive shocks at all four corners, this large SUV is incredibly waterproof, offering little body roll and excellent stability. Raw performance aside, the SVR nails the fun department, delivering a driving experience that requires little compromise for the buyer who needs a performance vehicle and family hauler.

One of those drawbacks, however, is the F-Pace’s ride quality, which is great when going through canyons, but stiff and bouncy around town. While the SVR is far from uncomfortable, a quick drive through a crowded city reveals where this SUV sits on the comfortable vs sporty spectrum.

The biggest improvement in SVR

While this refreshed 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR is fun to look at and even more fun to drive, its most significant improvement is in its interior. Instead of tweaking a few essential components, this latest F-Pace has an all-new interior design, including a new steering wheel, new instrument panel, infotainment screen, and more.

Gone is the 10-inch touchscreen of its predecessor which lived integrated into the dashboard. Instead, we now have an 11.4-inch unit with a tablet-style design that sits proudly above the SVR’s HVAC controls. This display is powered by the brand’s latest Pivi Pro infotainment system, which is both stylish and easy to use, while offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The SVR’s white leather seats are just as good looking as they are to sit on. These bucket-style sports seats offer cooling and heating functionality while supporting you without crashing into an attempt to be too sporty. The interior of the SVR strikes a fine balance between ergonomics and choice of materials, worthy of an almost six-figure SUV.

How much does the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR cost?

While the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR starts at $ 84,600 plus a destination charge of $ 1,150, our tester hit $ 97,379. Optional extras like premium paint for $ 4,550, 22-inch wheels for $ 1,200, and leather seats for $ 1,150, push this SUV price closer to six figures. While the SVR is far from cheap, V8-powered rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz all start at over $ 100,000, which makes this Jag a good value in its segment.

I haven’t found a thing that I would change about this throughout my time with my tester. This is precisely how I would go for an SVR, with just enough extras to accentuate its strengths. After a week with my tester, it was clear that while it might not be the world’s fastest or most luxurious SUV, the SVR is a great compromise between providing a fantastic driving experience and enough space for your family to follow.
