On Monday, the Eagles added another commitment to their class of 22, with the addition of athlete RJ Maryland of Southlake, TX. He is the 19th recruit in the current promotion. Here is our assessment of the last engagement

Perspective: RJ Maryland
Position: Large Receiver / Tight End / Athlete
Vital: 6 feet 4 inches, 210 pounds
School: Southlake Carroll
Rating: Three stars (247sports.com)
Other offers: Miami, Duke, Colorado, Georgia Tech, State of Kansas, State of Michigan, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Utah, Wisconsin

Frame: It will all depend on where they play it. It would be a bit on the smaller size if it went on the tight end. But the Eagles have already caught two tight ends in this class (Matt Ragan and Jeremiah Franklin), who are much better suited for the job. If Maryland play where I expect, as a wide receiver they have the frame to be something Boston College could use a lot, a real size. He’s long and unlike BC’s other two wide receivers, he can use this size to grab balls that other wide receivers and corners cannot.

Athletics : For a wide receiver, he is not the speedster as Joseph Griffin II and Ismael Zamor commit. But he has enough agility and speed to play the position well.

Polish: Again, that will all depend on where Frank Cignetti, Jeff Hafley, and the staff decide to play it. If he wants to be a tight end he is going to need to gain volume, 210 is not playing weight for this position. If it’s wide catcher, I could see him take a season to learn college speed, and offense and then jump in. Defense ? It may take a little while.

Final thoughts: It’s great that Jeff Hafley is recruiting speed over a lot of skill stations, but sometimes you just need a big, tall receiver that can just go up and get it. This is exactly what RJ Maryland is. CJ Lewis graduated and there was no real “big receiver” in the class of ’21. With Taji Johnson, Maryland will give the Eagles a great wide receiver that could be used in the red zone, or in various other ways.
