The Capitals wrap up their four-game home run of the season with their opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Capitals are 3-0-2 in their last five home games against the Bolts.
The Capitals are coming off a deflating 4-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Caps are one of two teams in the Metropolitan Division with a negative goal differential so far this season (-5). The only other team that does is the last-place Columbus Blue Jackets (-22).
What to pay attention to? John Carlson will return to the roster after missing the last six games through injury. He was injured against Nashville two weeks ago.
Darcy Kuemper will face the Lightning for the first time since the 2022 Stanley Cup Final.
Alex Ovechkin has six goals in his last nine games. Can he continue his beautiful hot streak?
Kevin McCarthy will be the Capitals head coach tonight with Peter Laviolette absent due to COVID protocol.

The Capitals started the fourth line – Protas-Dowd-Hathaway – with the team’s second pair, Fehervary-Jensen.
In the Capitals’ first shift, Nic Dowd had a great wide-opening chance from the slot but either hit the post or missed the net with his attempt.
Ovechkin nearly beat Andrei Vasilevskiy on the left wing but The Big Cat fought him off. Steven Stamkos followed that up by sounding a shot on the post. According to Joe Beninati, Ovi have scored 11 times on Vasilevskiy in their 15 encounters against each other.
Darcy Kuemper cleared the puck from the Capitals’ area and it ended up being a shot on goal on Andrei Vasilevskiy.
Kuemper makes two superb saves on a breakaway from Nikita Kucherov.
Vasilevskiy makes a superb save on a redirect from Evgeny Kuznetsov.
🚨 1-0 Capitals. Anthony Mantha scores his fifth goal of the season after a superb cross pass from Lars Eller. Mantha had already scored one goal in his last 10 games. The goal came at 10:32 of the first. (Video)

The Lightning shot the Capitals 9-7 in the first period, but the Capitals went 5-for-5, 18-16. Garnet Hathaway had four blocked shots during the period.
Garnet Hathaway started a fight with Pat Maroon as both teams waited for officials to review the major penalty.
NAK received a five-minute match penalty for an illegal head check. He was expelled.
The Capitals killed the Lightning’s five-minute power play and arguably had the better chances. And then as the PP expired…

The Lightning finished the second period with a 20-18 advantage in shots on goal, but the Capitals outshot them on 5-on-5 attempts 35-27. The Caps will start the third period on the power play.

🚨 4-1 Capitals. Nick Perbix scores. Darcy Kuemper loses the shutout on a pedestrian kick he’s seen all along.
🚨 5-1 Capitals. Sonny Milano scored his second goal of the night after Steven Stamkos sent his center pass into the Lightning net.
Peter Laviolette is credited with the win even though Kevin McCarthy was the team’s head coach tonight.
