KHADC toll barriers on national roads under study

SHILLONG, December 3: The alleged illegal Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) toll gates are operating along the Shillong Ring Road despite Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma ordering their closure ago a month.
Interior Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said on Friday that the government was looking into the matter.
“The case is under review. We will have a meeting on December 13 where we will discuss the matter. The necessary measures will be taken at the appropriate time, ”he said.
When asked if KHADC officials would attend the meeting, he said, “We need to discuss it at the government level first and see if it’s legal or illegal. If there is a problem, we will call all stakeholders ”.
“We’ll see the details after the meeting,” Rymbui said, answering a question if the doors will be inspected soon.
The CM had ordered the toll gates to be closed after questions had been asked about their existence.
Congress had warned against legal remedies if the government fails to address the problem of growing illegal toll barriers, allegedly put in place with political patronage.
Finding that the act amounted to extortion, the party demanded the arrest of those involved, claiming that the “illegal portals” were against the law on the National Highways Authority of India.
KHADC should take action. Earlier, its managing director, Titosstarwell Chyne, said this is a serious allegation and the board cannot remain silent.
The government has already written to district councils warning that these toll gates cannot work.
